“How adults learn...What this Means to the Human Resource Professional”by: Marilyn Stroud, MBA
What does the distinction between pedagogy and andragogy mean for human resource professionals? Over the last century, andragogy has evolved into a distinct field with the development of several theories, hypothesis, and reams of applications through a vast array of adult education programs. “Andragogical theory is making a difference in the way programs of adult education are being organized and operated, in the way teachers of adults are being trained, and in the way adults are being helped to learn...one of the chief distinctions between conventional and adult education is to be found in the learning process itself” (Holton, et al., 2005, p. 39). The various learning theorists present a variety of perspectives and ideas as to how adults learn and the best methods to teach them. Pedagogy theory, targets young learners, a traditional and holistic approach of teaching through socialization. Andragogy theory, introduced by Malcolm Knowles (1950), author and developer of Humanist Learning Theory, focus is adult learners through heuristic, exploratory, and experiential experience of the learner. more Richmond SHRM Heads to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, May 22

by: Judy Marston SPHR, Thanks to Julie Carbia and Kay Congdon for taking on the 2012 Strategic Leadership Conference. Why would they tackle this? Here’s why… Interview with Julie Carbia, Senior Manager of Operations, Internal Audit, Genworth "Last November, I attended a Richmond SHRM meeting and met Jeannie Alcott (Richmond SHRM Executive Director) for the first time. At that time I learned there was a need for the 2012 Conference Chair. Because of my positive experience at last year’s (2011) Conference and because of Jeannie’s obvious energy, I was inspired to get involved and I volunteered to co-chair the conference this year with Kay. The past Strategic Leadership Conference Co-Chairs, Jakeeta Plumley and Janna Higgins, provided a solid framework and tools that have been instrumental in helping us plan what we hope will be an extraordinary event. This year’s Subcommittee Chairs have just gotten started and already impress me with their level of engagement and commitment to the endless list of things to do. Jeannie’s passion and positive attitude is motivating at times when things may feel slightly overwhelming. more Interview with Kay Congdon: Owner, Marked by Excellence, LLC, HR Consultant Optimizing People and Positions "I have been a member of Richmond SHRM since my days as a student at the University of Richmond. I enjoy and value the educational opportunities, the meetings, and the connections I have gained through my membership. SHRM is a great support and resource for people in Human Resources. I attended the Leadership Conference last year and was very impressed with the leadership of Jakeeta Plumley and Janna Higgins. Julie and I chatted with Jeannie Alcott at the Richmond SHRM December social and discussed becoming involved with the Strategic Leadership Conference. Julie and I have worked well together in the past and we agreed to take on the leadership role for the Strategic Leadership Conference for 2012. We enjoy working alongside each other and believe that together we can successfully accomplish this challenge. Julie has such more |

Interview with Jamison Manion by: Ruby Foster, BSB/HRM,
Education and Training are to Workforce Development as food and water are to animal, and plant life. They are the disciplines HR practitioners use to promote and sustain employee and organizational growth. Like gardeners who test and assess soil before planting, so too HR practitioners must first test and assess the organization’s needs before designing, developing, more Board Member SpotlightMeet Ken Robertson, SPHR, IPMA-CP
“How did you become involved with the Society of Human Resource Management?” I joined SHRM in 1992, when I first moved to Richmond. At that time, I was in the U.S. Army. I knew though that I would retire in 1994, so I joined SHRM after a colleague recommended I do so as a way to start my transition more Generational DivideA new lens on generational opportunities Learning is learning, right? Wrong! by: Rick Albee, SPHR, CCP
HR pros know about the different learning styles in people. Some learn by watching, some by doing. Some learn better in groups, while others prefer quiet reflection. And the list goes on. This diversity of learning styles is what makes life so…interesting – and often confounding. But did you know that generations matter when it comes to learning styles? I’m afraid so.
